Ecology
Thugs work as enforcers for crime bosses, debt collectors, dockside protection rackets, and the occasional sanctioned militia in cities where the watch can't reach every quarter. They organize in crews of four to twelve under a captain or boss, sharing territory and splitting earnings according to a rough hierarchy enforced by violence. Most thugs grew up in the same neighborhoods they now extort and maintain childhood ties — old friends, family members, the baker who taught them their letters — that complicate their criminal work in unpredictable ways.
Behaviour
A thug projects bored menace as professional skill. They specialize in escalating an interaction just enough to get the desired result without bringing the watch down. They value loyalty to the crew above almost anything else and consider cooperation with authorities the worst possible betrayal. Most thugs drink heavily, gamble badly, and maintain elaborate small kindnesses toward neighborhood children and elders to launder their own self-image. They believe what they do is not really crime — just business in a system that hasn't given them better options.
Origin
Urban gangs emerged wherever cities grew faster than civic institutions could regulate them. Thug crews descend from medieval mutual-aid societies, dockworker brotherhoods, and the unofficial security services that immigrant communities formed when no one else would protect them. Modern crime bosses inherit this structure and exploit it. Most thugs would be horrified to learn how directly their loyalty oaths echo the pious mutual-aid charters their great-grandparents signed in chapels their grandchildren now firebomb on contract.
