Ecology

A vampire familiar is a mortal humanoid magically bonded to a vampire master through a ritual that grants partial undead protections, telepathic linkage, and unnaturally extended lifespan in exchange for total servitude. Most familiars were originally servants, lovers, or victims chosen for usefulness rather than affection. They maintain mortal needs — food, sleep, occasional sunlight — but their appearance grows pale, their eyes reflect oddly, and their reflections show subtle wrongness. Familiars handle daylight tasks the master cannot: errands, surveillance, the maintenance of the master's estate during the long resting hours.

Behaviour

A familiar speaks with the master's words half a beat behind their own thoughts. The bond compels obedience but doesn't erase personality, producing a layered consciousness where the original self watches their actions from somewhere inside. Most familiars develop coping mechanisms — ritualized hobbies, careful private correspondence, small acts of subtle disobedience — to preserve a sense of self. Toward strangers they're charming, helpful, and entirely unreliable. Toward the master they show abject devotion that may be magical compulsion, may be Stockholm-syndrome attachment, may be both.

Origin

The familiar bond originated in ancient blood-magic rituals developed by the first vampires to extend their reach during daylight hours. The ritual requires consent — given freely or extracted under duress — and binds the participant for as long as the master survives. When the master dies, surviving familiars often lose the protections and age rapidly, sometimes catastrophically. A few transition into vampires themselves through additional ritual, but the path is rare and most masters discourage it as a security risk.
