School Fit
The school of Transmutation is the engineer's school. Change the conditions, change the outcome of the fight. Shining Smite is Transmutation because the spell rewrites a property of a body, an object, or terrain. At level 2, Shining Smite sits in the mid-tier slot competition.
Class Fit
- Paladin: Paladins have a small prepared list. Shining Smite only earns the slot if it does something Divine Smite cannot substitute for. Damage taken while concentrating on Shining Smite forces a Con save at DC 10 or half damage, whichever is higher.
