Description
This spell puts you in contact with a god or a god's servants. You ask one question about a specific goal, event, or activity to occur within 7 days. The DM offers a truthful reply, which might be a short phrase or cryptic rhyme. The spell doesn't account for circumstances that might change the answer, such as the casting of other spells. If you cast the spell more than once before finishing a Long Rest, there is a cumulative 25 percent chance for each casting after the first that you get no answer.
5e (2014) vs 2024 changes
This spell has both a 5e (2014) and 2024 Player's Handbook version. Doungim shows the current 2024 stat block above. Differences between editions typically affect components, range, or scaling — check both source books for the table.
Doungim Lore
School Fit
Divination magic competes with skill checks. Where Perception, Investigation, and Insight reach, a Divination spell can reach further. The school tag on Divination comes from its method, not its damage — the spell extracts a fragment of the near future. Mid-tier casters can usually cast Divination once or twice per long rest.
Class Fit
- Cleric: Wisdom is the Cleric's casting stat, and the DC scales with proficiency bonus plus Wis modifier — Divination is castable at the Cleric's normal DC.
- Druid: Druids prepare Divination from the full list each day, but the Wild Shape economy means prep cycles look different from a Cleric's.
- Wizard: Tier 3 and tier 4 Wizards add 5th-9th level spells to the book — Divination interacts with those upper-tier picks as part of a full prep loadout.
Tactical play (Doungim editorial)
1-week sleep on a question, then ask the deity a single question. The deity gives a truthful but brief answer. Save for major plot questions.
